Putnam City parents who wish to enroll their children in the district’s 4-year-old program for the 2011-2012 school year should pick up application packets between 5 and 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 5, at the elementary school or off-campus site they wish their child to attend.
Completed application packets should be turned in between Monday, April 11, and Friday, April 22, at the Putnam City District Enrollment Office, 5604 N.W. 41st.
To be eligible for the program, children must be 4 years old on or before Sept. 1, 2011, and reside with a parent or legal guardian in the Putnam City school district.
Because some schools receive more applications than there are spots available for children, a procedure has been set up to insure fairness. Application packets at each school are numbered and will be handed out in order.
Parents who turn in completed packets before or on April 22 and have a packet number that falls within the number of spots available at the school will have their children placed in the program.
Parents who turn in their packets on or before the deadline but have a packet number higher than the number of available spots at the school (and if all lower-numbered packets have been turned in) will be offered the chance to place their child in a program at another school which has openings.
Programs for 4-year-olds are taught by an early childhood education certified teacher and a teaching assistant. The programs emphasize language and cognitive development, socialization and motor skills. The program improves readiness for kindergarten and nurtures positive attitudes toward learning.
All 18 district elementary schools will offer full-day 4-year-old programs next year and six of the schools will also offer half-day programs. Two district early childhood centers will offer full-day programs, and eight partnership sites will offer half-day programs.
The 4-year-old program follows the Putnam City school calendar, with the first day of classes set for Thursday, Aug. 18.
